Pastor Alexis Johnson is a senior pastor of Shekinah Glory Christian Church in Newark, N.J., a thriving inner-city non-denominational church with a prophetic mandate to impact the world.
He is a native of Red Bank, NJ and a volunteer Prison Ministry chaplain at the Monmouth County Correctional Institute, Freehold, NJ for over 17 years. Founder of Setting the Captive Free Prison Ministry, a non-Profit Corporation since 2009, Pastor Johnson has a 6-member staff who serve as volunteers in Prison Ministry under his supervision.
Born into a Christian family, Pastor Johnson left home at the age of 16 to reside in East Elmhurst, N.Y. where he entered a world of drugs, prison life, the Nation of Islam (becoming a minister under Louis Farrakhan), practicing Orthodox Islam and serving as an Imam (Muslim leader).
In December of 1986, through the witness of his twin sister, Pastor Johnson was transformed by the power of the Gospel and accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior and became born-again.
Pastor Johnson joined Mount Carmel Christian Center in 1991 and served as director of the Trustee Board, developing youth ministry and mentoring in foster teens-care, and youth conference planning. He was then prepared for ministry and ordained an Elder by the late Rev. David E. Alston. (Following the death of Pastor Alston in 1996, the church became Tabernacle of Glory Church.)
In 2002, under the leadership of Pastor Joseph Okpanachi, Pastor Johnson was installed into the office of a Pastor by the then Bishop Loretta P. Smith-Koffi, where he served as an associate pastor of Tabernacle of Glory Church until joining Shekinah Glory Christian Church in 2012.
Pastor Johnson possesses a fierce anointing for reaching unbelievers–particularly Muslims, satan worshipers, drug dealers and gang-bangers. Prison Ministry (the belly of the beast) is his God-given passion, and he is most at home when ministering the Gospel and challenging men to come into the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.
Professionally, Pastor Johnson is the business owner of Christos Painting With Excellence Company since 1973 and an experienced personal tax preparer for more than 30 years. He also worked as a Mortgage Advisor for 6 years following his retirement from Jersey Central Power & Light Company as an Electrical Cable Splicer after 21 years of service.
Pastor Johnson has an earned Associate Degree in Social Science from Brookdale Community College in 1978 and is the author of “I was a Minister in the Nation of Islam, Now I’m a Minister for Christ”, published by Pleasant Word A Division of WinePress Group.
A loving, loyal and responsible father figure to many, Pastor Johnson has the unique ability to seed into the lives of others by word and deed, that they would know that the blessing of God is limitless.
Pastor Alexis Johnson joyfully shares his life with his wife, Bishop Loretta Smith-Johnson, their children, grandchildren, and family.
